Battery Intelligence Engineered for Automotive Grade Reliability

Qnovo Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC)

Delivering industry-leading charging speeds while extending battery life, transforming the economics and reliability of electric mobility.

What is Adaptive Fast Charging?

AFC is Qnovo’s intelligent charging solution that dynamically optimizes charging parameters in real-time based on actual battery condition rather than static protocols. The system continuously monitors and adjusts charging rates to ensure optimal performance without compromising battery longevity or safety.

AFC can deliver 100 miles in 5 minutes using a 350 kW charger. By adapting to the unique characteristics of each battery and addressing inherent variability in battery manufacturing, AFC enables faster, safer charging across diverse operating conditions, delivering up to a 50% increase in cycle life compared to conventional charging methods.

How AFC Works

AFC's closed-loop feedback system monitors each series element individually, whether a single cell or set of cells, to identify the weakest series element in the pack every 1-5 seconds. The system adjusts charge rate based on the weakest element's conditions to control the aging of the pack. Chemical battery models use real-time diagnostic data to determine optimal charging based on health and operating conditions such as temperature. The software takes corrective actions by making small adjustments in charging to prevent excessive degradation or failure.

Smarter Charging Technology

AFC's dynamic algorithms deliver 100 miles in 5 minutes using a 350 kW charger. The system automatically adapts to temperature extremes, maintaining all-weather performance while extending battery lifespan despite frequent fast charging. Compared to conventional charging methods, AFC delivers up to 50% cycle life extension by continuously adjusting charging speed based on the weakest cell health in the pack, ensuring the entire battery system charges safely and efficiently.

Technical Implementation

AFC is a software-only solution that runs as AUTOSAR and non-AUTOSAR applications on the vehicle BMU. It supports 400V and 800V architectures, charging infrastructure up to 350 kW, and integrates with any BMS through standardized APIs without additional hardware. Over-the-air (OTA) updates enable continuous improvement across the vehicle lifecycle.

AFC is compatible with major cell vendors including Samsung SDI, CATL, LG Energy Solution, and SK On, and supports leading chemistries and form factors across single and multi-pack configurations in centralized and distributed BMS architectures.

Performance Reporting and Transparency

AFC includes comprehensive diagnostic and reporting capabilities that provide real-time performance monitoring of charging behavior and battery response. The system tracks aging behavior to help fleets and drivers understand battery degradation patterns over time. Remaining Useful Life (RUL) projections enable proactive lifecycle planning, while battery passport functionality provides complete transparency into battery history, giving stakeholders full visibility into AFC's operations and the value it delivers.

Tunable and Configurable Solutions

AFC delivers unmatched flexibility through customizable charging profiles tailored to specific vehicles, duty cycles, and operating conditions. OEMs can quickly tune and deploy configurations without reintegration or code changes, accelerating time to market and reducing complexity.

Charging parameters can be adjusted in the field via over-the-air updates, enabling dynamic trade-offs between charging speed and cycle life. AFC also supports software-defined vehicle architectures and autonomous, unattended operations, while giving drivers the ability to choose between fast charging and extended battery life through a mobile app with full visibility into battery health.

Field Mitigation and Recall Prevention

AFC's adaptive capabilities enable proactive response to emerging battery issues without vehicle recalls or service visits. The system can modify charging behavior to mitigate warranty issues through early detection and corrective action, potentially reducing recall costs by enabling software-based remediation. Event logging provides validation and troubleshooting capabilities, while field issue diagnostics enable rapid identification and resolution of deployment challenges. This unique capability allows manufacturers to respond to battery-related concerns quickly and cost-effectively.
